Dignified Disposal of Unserviceable U. S. Flags
Flag Day - June 14, 2002

FLAG DAY is June 14th and is meant to observe the anniversary of the adoption on June 14, 1777,
by the Continental Congress of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the
United States of America.

It is also the proper day to dispose of unserviceable flags: U. S. Flag Code (36 US Code 10, k) ...
"The flag, when it is in such condition that is is no longer a fitting emblem for display,
should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

Old Abe Camp #8, Department of Wisconsin conducts a "dignified disposal" of unserviceable
U. S. Flags on Flag Day. A short, respectable ceremony is conducted which lasts about
20 minutes. Each flag is individually inspected to determine its unserviceability
prior to being placed in the burning receptacle.

Our Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and the
Auxiliary of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War takes an additional step
in the dignified disposal of unserviceable U. S. Flags......

After the unserviceable Flags of our Country are properly disposed of, we collect the ashes and grommets
(as have been done in days past) and spread those ashes upon a Veterans grave at a Grave Marker Dedication Ceremony. Ancestors or relatives also bury the grommets at the grave-site
