On May 5, 1864, The 7th Wisconsin Regiment was fighting the Confederates in dense growth, which
completely screened the combatants on both sides. In this fray William was shot below the left knee fracturing
the fibula. According to William’s pension report, “…when wounded he hid behind a stump where he fell and
lay there about a day. Meanwhile, the Union forces had been driven back and the ground where he lay was in
the possession of the Rebel forces.

It is likely that William was wounded by a Georgian in John B. Gordon’s Brigade, which launched an attack
against the largely isolated Iron Brigade. General Cutler’s Iron Brigade held a position south of Saunder’s
Field and above a small creek called Mill Branch which was just above the

Orange Turnpike. The Iron Brigade was exposed to “heavy flanking fire” that tore apart several regiments,
including the 7th Wisconsin which was particularly exposed. Cutler noted in his report that his brigade lost
“very heavily in killed and wounded.” He was not exaggerating. According to the book “Four years with the
Iron Brigade,” The 7th Wisconsin suffered its worst loss of the war in a single battle at the Wilderness with 27
killed, 155 wounded, and 35 missing.

Granddaughter Hazel (Steinbach) Culver and grandson, Jesse Taylor, recalled the story that when William
went to bathe his wound in a nearby stream he was captured by Confederate soldiers.

Following his capture, William was held at a camp near the battlefield with other prisoners; then moved to a
temporary hospital at Locust Grove where he was examined by a surgeon. He remained there for about twenty-
four days and was then moved to a hospital in Lynchburg, where he stayed until July when he was taken to
Andersonville Prison. By that time he was on crutches and there was no further medical treatment, as there
were no doctors at Andersonville. Fellow POW Frederick Seibert, Co. E, 25th WI Infantry of Platteville said “I
saw Carlile on crutches at Andersonville in July and August, 1864 when I was exchanged (prisoner exchange.)”

William was a prisoner for the duration of the war. A fellow prisoner and Platteville friend, Charles
Weittenhiller, stated, “If he [William] did not have an iron constitution he would have never survived a ten
month imprisonment in that Rebel (deleted).” Several prisoners from Platteville congregated together while at
Andersonville and later they gave depositions regarding the wound and state of health of William during that
time. The Army Surgeon Report, made after the war in William’s pension claim, read “had diarrhea while in
prison, when got out [was] much debilitated. Bone worked out of calf of leg.”

Grandson Robert Taylor remembered his grandfather, Alfred, telling him that William survived in
Andersonville by eating rats.

My father, Lowell Taylor, told the story that William “came out of Andersonville with the same clothes on that
he was wearing when he went in. His food ration on the first day was a [cow] ball joint. A fellow POW got an
eyeball. He traded and found that he got the worst of the trade.”

Hazel (Steinbach) Culver remembered hearing that “he [William] was released with an old pair of pants and
shoes. That’s all. He had bad body lice. He had no place to clean up in prison. A piece of meat the size of his
fist was all he got in a day to eat.”

The Andersonville Prisoner of War Camp was liberated in April, 1865. According to the Adjutant Generals
Report dated May 6, 1882, William was “receipted” for in Vicksburg, Mississippi on April 18, 1865 as a
“paroled prisoner of war” and assigned to Benton Barracks, a troop encampment, near St. Louis, Missouri,
arriving on April 26.

On May 6, William was given a thirty-day furlough. He went home to Platteville, never returning to Benton
Barracks, and was initially listed as a deserter. In this same Adjutant General’s Report “the charge of desertion
on Prisoner of War Records is removed” and William was listed as honorably discharged on June 12, 1865. He
was mustered out formally on July 13, 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin.
