Corporal Francis Waller was one of 63 men who was awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism in the battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1 - 3, 1863. On the first day of that battle, after the defeat of Archer's assault south of the Chambersburg Pike, the 6th Wisconsin Infantry was receiving fire from Confederate infantry in the railroad cut to the north. The Union soldiers charged into a heavy fire, and four men were killed or wounded in attempts to capture the flag of the 2d Mississippi (Confederate States of America). Private Waller reached the enemy color bearer, knocked him down, and captured the flag. He then stood on the captured flag and continued to fire into the ranks of the enemy. Later he turned the flag over to his regimental commander, Colonel Dawes. (The flag captured by Corporal Waller was later returned to the State of Mississippi on March 25, 1905.)
